find fair trade fruit. . .where????

Help me find it!  — 2 years ago

I have discovered that there is such a thing as fair trade fruit, specifically bananas, as well as rice and sugar. (and coffee and chocolate, which are much easier to find). Currently, when I buy bananas, I am saving an additional amount (representing the additional cost I would pay for fair trade bananas, if I could find them) and hope to donate the savings to oxfam or heifer or something similar. Does anyone know of anywhere to buy (in a local store, or online, or somehow) fair trade foods other than chocolate and coffee???

Where to find fair trade fruit

Rachel,

If you are lucky enough to have a Wild Oats natural foods grocery store near you, they are one of the only national chains I know of that carry fair trade fruit. Depending on the season, I have found FT bananas, FT mangoes, and FT pineapples.

As for FT sugar, Equal Exchange www.equalexchange.org now sells it. They are the first FT business in the U.S. and are still 100% fair trade.

And remember, if you go to a farmers market or buy your produce from a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farmer, everything you buy will likely be fair trade—meaning, fair compensation for the producer.

Best, andrew
